Artificial Timber | Its Types, Properties & Uses

 What is Artificial Timber ?

The artificial timber is made of enhanced, modified and thermoplastic material that is filled with wood fiber and plant fiber.

  • Combining advantages of timber and plastics, the material features in corrosion resistance, warp free, convenience in maintenance and superficial similarity to wood etc.
  • The artificial timber was invented by Shri S.G. Kulkarni and the artificial timber is also termed to be as poly-timber or an artificial wood. It was developed in the year 1993.
  • It is the best substitute over the entire range of natural wood, jungle wood and the exotic woods like Burma teak, sag wood.
  • Since the process involves "extrusion" the end products like squares, hexagons, angles, flats, channels, hollow sections etc. can be produced so as to 'minimize' skilled labour.
  • All mechanical processes like planning, drilling, chipping, milling, screwing, painting, varnishing, laminating are totally eliminated in the artificial timber.

Types of artificial timber available in market

There are three types of artificial timber available in market. They are as follows-

1.    MPPT = Market Potential for Poly – Timber.

2.    PMNW = Potential Market for Natural Wood.

3.    PMLAS = Potential Market for Light Aluminium Sections.

4.    PMCPM =Potential Market for Ceiling Proofing Materials.

Properties of Artificial Timber

1. It is termite proof as well as moisture proof.

2. It has better resistance to sea water, lower acidic or alkaline chemicals.

3. It has better insulation against heat and sound.

4. It has good di-electric strength.

5. It has good colouring ability.

6. Natural wood generates carbon monoxide which is toxic gas but artificial timber do not produce toxic gas. Hence it is eco-friendly material.

7. It is lighter than natural wood.

8. It is fire resistant.

9. It has higher strength and low density.

10. It is economical as compared to wood.

Uses of Artificial Timber:

1.It is used to make door and window frames, planks, round and square sections for furniture.

2. Besides replacing natural wood in many applications poly-timber or artificial timber can replace aluminium because of its higher strength, low density, poor heat and electrical conductivity, noise-absorbing capacity.

3. An artificial timber can also be used as a ceiling proofing material in construction line.

4. Glass panes fitted in an aluminium frame cracks in severe winter while it may fall loose in extreme summer but this will not happened in case of artificial timber frame.

5. It is cost effective as compared to natural wood and even the big problem of the plastic bags which is faced by the society can be solved easily as plastic bags can be used or recycled as raw material for the production of the poly-timber or artificial timber.

6. It is used to make various structural members like squares, hexagons, angles, flats, channels, hollow sections etc.

Acoustics Materials:

When the sound intensity is more, then it gives the great trouble or nuisance to the particular area like auditorium, cinemall hall, studio, recreation center, entertainment hall, college reading hall. Hence it is very important to make that area or room to be sound proof by using a suitable material called as acoustics material. It is measured in decibles (db).

Acoustics materials play a vital role in the various area of building construction. In studio, class room, reading hall, cinema theatre, more concentration is required to listen, hence the acoustics treatment is provided so as to control the outside as well as inside sound of the various building until such that sound will be audiable without any nuisance or disturbance.
